Romania Mission

Instead of going to Paris, Barcelona, or innumerable other vacation destinations in Europe, a group of Franciscan University and LCI students decided to serve the poor at a mission site in Baia Mare, Romania. From March 28 to April 4, fourteen students and LCI staff Erin Hurd and Jenny Healy joined the Sacred Heart Foundation to help founders Sr. Rosalba and Claudia Cufioan. The help consisted in feeding, bathing, and playing with 50 children from poor families; doing household chores and teaching English to 11 abandoned girls who live at the home; and evangelizing through prayer, skits, and games a group of 30 teenagers who regularly volunteer at the home. Judging from the experience of the American and LCI volunteers, it was a tremendous success: “I cannot imagine a better way to spend ten days,” says Metod Huzovic. “The Romania mission trip opened my eyes to see that if you trust in God you will go by the best way in your life. Romania is an awesome country with an interesting culture, and it is a country which needs help from the Church.”

LCI Graduate Rebuilding the Church in Czech

Sixty years ago, under the atheistic Communism, the Monastery dedicated to Our Lady at Kraliky in the Czech Republic was closed. Some of the buildings were even used as a prison for priests and nuns. Today the monastery is open again, with two daily Masses and retreats and pilgrimages throughout the year. George (LCI ’92) and Geraldine Kubis have been involved with the restoration since 2006. They have reopened the guest house and restaurant, helped inaugurate family-centered retreats, and have begun more extensive  renovation of the church complex, which dates to the seventeenth century and includes a replica of the holy steps. Together with their seven children, they have brought back devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary and a spirit of hope and renewal. For more information, see the website at www.kraliky-klaster.cz

Gelato Sunday for LCI

St. Bernard Parish of Keene, NH, sponsored "Gelato Sunday" to help raise money for LCI. Following each Mass on Sunday, August 9, parishioners were given the opportunity to learn more about LCI and its role in the New Evangelization. Samples of authentic Italian gelato were enjoyed by all who made a contribution!
